Week of October 24 2007 Super Short Reviews

:(

I'm sick right now. ;-; I feel awful. That's why I haven't posted the reviews lately :( *growls*

Neways I'll make this fast :D

Here's the comics I got:

Action Comics - #857
Blue Beetle - #20
Green Arrow: Year One - #6 (of 6)
Green Lantern Corps - #17
JLA Classified - #45
Superman - #669
Tales of the Sinestro Corps: Superman-Prime - #1 (One Shot)
Teen Titans - #52

And here are the super short reviews :D

Action Comics - #857 - Good :O Surprisingly good considering I didn't like the previous 2 books in this arc :D We usually dun see much about Jonathan Kent but here we get to see him show why Superman's heroism comes from what he learnt from his parents :D Also a happy ending and a happy Bizarro :3 (Or is that sad Bizarro? :O) I'm still confused about whether Bizarro's are backwards or just stupid tho :( 4/5 Angelwings

Blue Beetle - #20 - I alrdy long reviewed this but it is super awesome has great plot points and character advancement and shows how to do a tie-in without making it hurt the individual hero's book :D 100000007/5 Angelwing Cats :D

Green Arrow: Year One - #6 (of 6) - Actually after reading this last issue I realized that the reason the whole arc has felt so odd is b/c it's not a comic book, it's a Green Arrow movie. XD It's exactly what a Green Arrow movie would be like. It takes liberties with the story, doesn't indulge in fan service, and hits plot points in methodical order like it's reading off a checklist. xD This is actually a bit of a weak finale given that more was prolly expected. :( And it's quite cliched. :\ But it isn't too bad of an ending :) It's just nothing rly special. :\ 2/5

Green Lantern Corps - #17 - Super great fun :D As usual the Sinestro War stories shine and this is no different :D 3.5/5

JLA Classified - #45 - Confusing! :O And weird ;-; I think there's a story in here somewhere but it's rly confusing and it's so hard to actually know what's going on. :\ I think the writer is trying for a "what's real and what's not?" sorta trippy story, but it's not actually working very well and instead it's just very confusing :( 1.5/5

Superman - #669 - Weird! :D It's like Superman is listening to somebody talk about Star Wars or something :O The plot is mostly a flashback told from another char's past but it rly plays a lot like an 80s sci fi story. Which is fun :D It seems to contradict a lot of post-crisis Superman canon tho. :\ 3/5

Tales of the Sinestro Corps: Superman-Prime - #1 (One Shot) - GREAT :D Except for one rly glaring and obvious and annoying logical flaw this was a great issue :) And it told us lots about Superboy Prime and it actually made me feel kinda bad for him. :( It must be hard being so alone. ;-; But everything about it was pretty great and fun and stuffs and as usual the Sinestro Corps war is just so fun to read :D I dunno why Countdown and Amazons Attack was getting all the attention for crossovers. :( 4/5

Teen Titans - #52 - :\ This issue was okay, but not great. :( Ppl are still not rly in char, which is okay, since I guess McKeever needs time to learn them, but Beetle was definitely not in char. It was like he was filling a stereotypical teenage highschool role for who a char like Blue Beetle MIGHT be, but it wasn't Blue Beetle. :( Also Wonder Woman was out of character too. >_>;;; The plot isn't that interesting yet either considering the material they have to work with. But it's not a bad issue either :) 2.5/5

Neways :D I need smeep :( I'm so tired and cold and achy :( I also need soup >:| *hugs*

And I need to decide what graphic novel to pick up on Wed b/c I need to use my 50% off coupon before it expires (on Wed XD). :D

Blue Beetle - #20 Review

Blue Beetle - #20

Synopsis: During the battle for Earth, one of the Sinestro Corps members is killed and his ring finds Peacemaker and makes him a member of the Corps. :O

The Reach appear and explain to Peacemaker that b/c the programming for the Scarab (that Jaime has) was mistakenly put in him, they've gradually implanted a Scarab into his body and let it slowly interface with it's proper programming. The Reach talk amongst each other and say that while openly they cannot ally with Sinestro (b/c of their truce with the Guardians) if the ring chose Peacemaker and happened to do bad things b/c of the Scarab it isn't their fault rly. They also predict "only" a 99% chance that Sinestro will beat the GL Corps and apparently that isn't enuf of a chance for them to take :O

Beetle suddenly feels the presence of ebil!Sinestro!Scarab!Peacemaker and flies off and finds him decimating the US military. :O Suddenly he reveals himself and Beetle realizes that he's fighting his mentor :O Beetle finds himself overmatched by the addition of a yellow ring (as the Scarab and Reach technology is weak to the GL rings). :(

The Reach watch and reveal that while the Infiltrator is not at full power yet, it will be and when it is it will be unstoppable and they will give him to Sinestro in exchange for Earth (why does everybody want Earth? >_>)

Beetle is rescued by a Green Lantern officer who also thinks that he is ebil but he manages to convince her that he's not. Jaime finds it odd that Infiltrator keeps saying that he wants to bring peace to the world and begins to realize that Peacemaker is not completely gone (despite what the Reach says).

He concocts a plan to hack into Infiltrators consciousness and the Lantern assists by distracting Infiltrator (at risk to her own life) allowing Beetle to get close and interface! :D

Inside it's brain, Jaime finds Peacemaker held captive and giving up. He believes he has no right to live or get redemption b/c of how bad he is and b/c his father worked for Hitler :O

Jaime tells Peacemaker that they must fight back against the fear, but Peacemaker says that together they still dun have the willpower to overcome his fear as a manifestation of Infiltrator is about to kill them. :O However suddenly they are saved by an empty Blue Beetle suit! :D It's a manifestation of the Scarab who came to rescue Jaime and together the THREE of them have the willpower to escape! :D

YAY SCARAB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GO SCARABKINS! ^____^

:D

They break free and the ring leaves Peacemaker but he realizes that he still has the Scarab in him. Peacemaker realizes that you can't get peace thru hate and that is how he was so easily taken over. He grabs a Scarab blade and cuts the beetle out of his body, to symbolize him cutting out his hate. :O He lays dying in Jaime's arms saying that he was the monster that he feared Jaime would be and that he finally has peace. :O

;-;

Poor Peacemaker. ;-;

Review: OMG THAT WAS THE GREATEST ISSUE EVAR :OOOOOOOOOO SRSLLLYYYY This could rly be a landmark issue for Blue Beetle b/c (assuming that Peacemaker dies) it rly changes and adds a lot of things to Jaime's story :D

1) His first mentor is dead, and he's basically learnt all he could from him. So he has to stand on his own and move on.

2) This is the first time he's had somebody close to him and a fellow superhero die fighting his enemies. :(

3) The Beetle has proven to be fully independent now and has learnt from Jaime goodness and heroism and is friends and partners with Jaime rather than some crazy killing machine under his control :D

:O

Those are important things in his evolution as a hero!

Personally I'm rly hoping that Brik (the GL who helped him) will return and be a new mentor figure for Jaime. :) He's alrdy learnt everything he can from Peacemaker and even tho he's sorta learning from the notes of Ted Kord it'd be nice if somebody was around to teach him how to be a hero now (and not just how to fight like Peacemaker did). :D Like Luke going from Obi-Wan to Yoda. :D

If Peacemaker IS dead, it would make a lot of sense and it is a very fitting way for him to go. :] Tho sad. :\ But the death of a mentor is often an important part in a journey of a hero. :D And that's what's so great about Blue Beetle, it IS about the evolution and growth and journey of a hero.

Most young heroes have some moment where they become a hero and suddenly are (like Spider-Man), and then they have crazy adventures and mebbe there will be other things (like the death of Gwen Stacy) but Beetle's journey is definitely more of an arc and all the plots work together :D

I rly like how Peacemaker was always fearful that Beetle was evil and would be corrupted b/c he was young and naive and the Beetle would take him over. But in fact it was Peacemaker's cynicism, fear and hatred that allowed the Scarab to take him over, and it was Jaime's hope, determination and goodness that saved him, including the fact that Jaime was nice to his Scarab and they get along now :D

I totally luff how the Scarab saved them :D It was very unexpected but I was SOOOO happy to see it! The series has totally transcended the cliche "confused boy has a killer suit that is ebil" plot that ppl wrote it off as at the beginning. :D

It's sooo much more now :D The suit is a seperate entity and Jaime communicates with it. It gives him ideas on what to do and he in turn is teaching it morality and stuff :D And now it rescued him!

:D

Peacemaker's father worked for Hitler? :( I can see why he would have so many issues now. ;-;

I rly like Jaime's working relationship with Brik and how Brik ultimately does work with him. :D

Proof of how far Jaime's come is this wonderful line of dialogue:

Jaime: Brik, my scarab says I can hack into his brain scarab link. But it's messy. ... Yes. "Messy and probably fatal" heard you the first time.

Brik: It is more of a plan than I can muster. What do you need of me?

Jaime: Get his attention for ten seconds! AND TRY TO STAY ALIVE FOR AT LEAST EIGHT OF 'EM!

:D

Jaime has never been more confident than at this moment :D Not only that he's actually acknowledging that she might die but he's willing to put his trust in her :D

That's rly great and I like how he's finally getting comfortable with battle situations and thinking on his feet and also that in crisis situations he's no longer thinking that he's a scared boy, but that he's thinking of how to deal with it. :D

Infiltrator: Beetle! You've made your last mistake!! The two of you were almost a challenge! But alone- This lantern is nothing more than a distraction!

Jaime: Exactly.

:D

Can you imagine Jaime saying that a few issues ago? :D

XD

And it's a natural evolution of his char too! It's not like suddenly he became a hero, he's slowly been getting more comfortable with the Scarab, with his role in life and with who he is. :D He's become more sure of himself :3

That's so smexy XD

Oh! I also like how Brik called him Reachling :D It's why I think (and hope) she will return as a recurring char.

I luff how Beetle has such a great supporting cast made of people all over the DCU but are mostly unique to his book (Peacemaker, Traci 13, hopefully Brik? :D) :)

Plus we need more female mentors :)

The Reach are finally proving to be interesting and cocky villains :D They are pretty standard in the "haha we will win" way but they are also very cautious. Apparently a 99% chance isn't enuf for them to take. XD MIND YOU, I thought 99% was overkill but it was also fun :D B/c Blue Beetle is at heart a very modern and nuanced take on the classic superhero tropes :D It's both simple and complex at the same time. :)

Beetle is the underdog hero who is still learning himself against an unstoppable empire who does ebil schemes he has to constantly foil. So it makes sense that "stacking the odds" in such a ridiculous manner would fit here. :D

Like you'd think that saying Sinestro had a 70% chance of victory against Earth would be enuf, but 99% is rly crazy cuz like.. there's only ONE PERCENT that the GL Corps and all of Earth's heroes will win? :\

Srsly e_e;;

I know that heroes fight against odds but it's rly unlikely that they'd calculate such steep odds.

Also with Beetle going into Infiltrator's mind and seeing physical representations and that Peacemaker is literally chained in his own brain is very... cliched XD

But well done :D

And that the Reach keeps saying how easily their guy is gonna pwn Jaime, it does a very cliched but classic "stacking of the odds" against the hero XD But again, well done :D

I always thought that the best way to write stories is not to avoid the cliches b/c often the reason a lot of story progression is the same and stuff is b/c it WORKS, but just to do it well and have deep and interesting characters, rather than shallow characters and OMG PLOT TWISTS GALORE. >_>

I also think that the reason this book has been so good is b/c it's been Rogers writing every story and it's been very consistant. This is the common complaint of manga vs comics, that manga has one author who understands the chars b/c he created them and so it doesn't seem weird and disjointed with bizarre characterization but that American comics have writers jumping on constantly with different takes. :o

I hope that Rogers stays on the book as long as he can tho :D He's rly great on it XD And the stories have been very consistant and progress in a logical fashion. :) The characterization is always spot on and there's never any "omg s/he wouldn't do that" moments :o

Peacemaker's death in a bloody puddle with Jaime holding his head and over him is very moving. :D And at least it's not a girl dying to give him angst (tho father figures are up there with women and children, but father figures need to be developed to die, while women and children dying is just "tragic" in general which is why it's such a common cheat >_>).

I also like how Peacemaker took his own life too b/c he saw that peace could only be achieved without hate and he had so much hate and didn't want to become a monster again. :\ It was very sad but heroic. :*)

The next issue holds a lot of promise too :O It's about Jaime finding the man who crippled his father, and given how Jaime must alrdy feel with the death of Peacemaker, this is sure to be a test of Jaime's goodness :)

Also after being off for 1.5 issues, Albuquerque is back on art and I'm so glad cuz even tho the other artist was okay, it's just not the same :D Blue Beetle should always be written by John Rogers and drawn by Rafael Alburquerque. :D

NEWAYS, I luffed this issue to death and I think it might be the best Beetle issue yet and that's saying a lot since I alrdy luff Blue Beetle so much. :D

Angelwings Rating: 5 heroic Scarabs out of 5 dying Peacemakers :(
Recommendation: GET IT >:O NOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW >:OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO *growls*

Note: The reason I haven't put up Super Short Reviews yet is cuz I haven't finished reading all the comics I bought today yet XD But I rly wanted to talk about this while it's still fresh in my mind. :)

Week of October 17, 2007 Super Short Reviews

>_>

Hi :D

I'm not in a great mood thanks to a friend who decided he hated me cuz I had OMG smex in the past :O And he's being a jerk :(

BUT NEWAYS

This week I got 5 comics :D

I will be dong my reviews again xD I'm on anti-depressants now but so far they do not seem to be helping :(

I hope they do tho :(

I WANT MY HAPPY BACK >:O

*GROWLS*

Neways I got:

Birds of Prey - #111
The Brave and the Bold - #7
Catwoman - #72
Checkmate - #19
JLA Classified - #44

Kk :D

So none of the "big" books this week but still funnish :D

Here are my super short reviews XD

Birds of Prey - #111 - Great :D I rly liked the characterization of Oracle and Calculator here and how they meet. XD Esp Calculator who comes off as a lot of ppl I've known personally in my life (including the aforementioned friend, who even before jerkmode was acting like that towards others :\). It would be interesting to see if nething comes from this meeting between the two also :D And Misfit's solution to the problem is so brilliantly simple you wonder why other heroes dun think of this XD 4/5

The Brave and the Bold - #7 - Fun :D Sorta >_> I feel so bad for Superman in this issue XD ALSO I felt that while Waid writes the chars in a fun way, he didn't "get" Diana and esp Power Girl. He simplifies Power Girl from a complex intelligent leader in JSA to a Hawkgirl from the JL Animated Series clone who is all just "rawr punch first rawr". :\ And that's not Power Girl at all. She IS assertive and brash and stuff but she ISN'T just "me Power Girl me punch" type. :( At least Diana IS NOT the Diana being portrayed in Wonder Woman right now and she's still brave and intelligent and stuff :D The plot is fun tho XD 3/5

Catwoman - #72 - Everything leading up to this issue has been misleading. XD The obvious DOES NOT HAPPEN. Even tho some of it does. :( Hopefully this wun lead to a very cliche plot happening in the future. :\ Sadly b/c nothing of note rly happens this issue feels very fillerish. :\ Other than some dialogue between Batman and Catwoman, it feels like a lull between plots but there's not a lot of real characterization either. :\ I was hoping for more but I was also fearful of more, so it's good that my fears didn't come true? XD Still I dun think it's that great an issue. :( 2/5

Checkmate - #19 - Checkmate is always great and amusing and watching the point/counter-point actions between Amanda Waller and the US and Checkmate and the UN is rly interesting. :D It's also interesting that Amanda and her cohorts are not portrayed as EVIL tho they clearly play outside the rules, but they are just trying to represent the best interests of their country. :) It's odd that the cliffhanger of last issue was never addressed rly or explained at all so we're left with a huge dangling question mark that seems glaring given that it ended the last issue. :o There's great characterization with August General finally tho and it's been a LONG TIME COMING! YAY HE HAS A CHARACTER NOW!!! XD 4/5

JLA Classified - #44 - This arc is kinda weird :\ Altho a lot happens in this issue, not a lot happens at the same time. :( Interesting points are raised by the timeline is so disjointed that unless you rly have read every issue involving the chars and know when everything takes place it seems so confusing to understand! :\ Just for that it was rly hard for me to read. ;-; We still aren't rly finding out more about J'onn tho the idea of him causing major crises subconsciously in order to bring heroes together cuz he's lonely is a rly interesting one :D I hope the arc picks up after this issue :) 2.5/5

:D

Kk so that's it :D

Reviews coming I hope. :( I'm sorry I haven't lately. But I'm still around I promise, just... real life and stuff :(

*hugs*

Bais :)

Week of Oct. 10 2007 Super Short Reviews

Kk :D

Hi XD

Sorry I've been so late in writing this :( Firstly, I totally forgot that Monday was Canadian Thanksgiving and therefore comics would be delayed a week, so when I went on Wednesday, I was greeted by empty shelves XD So I had to go to another store on Thursday (since I didn't want to spend the $10 to go into the city and back) to get them :D

Sadly they were more expensive at the other store, but they weren't $10 more expensive so it worked out XD

Secondly, I had to write my guest column for Girls Read Comics Too and I spent a lot of time trying to figure out WHAT I was gonna write about XDDD But I'm so glad it's done now :D Deadlines stress me soooooo much XD

Neways this week I got:

Booster Gold - #3
Green Lantern - #24
Suicide Squad - #2 (of 8)
Superman - #668

I'm actually glad there wasn't a lot this week :) Esp since each comic was 75 cents more expensive at the place closer to me >:|

But 4 at 75 is still only 3 dollars more and that's still 7 dollars less than I would have spent just to get the cheaper comics XD

So here are the super short reviews :O

Booster Gold - #3 - Fun! :D I luff Booster Gold so much XD And this is another great and amusing story, and it has Jonah Hex in it! :D I just hope that the "Booster Gold causes all of the DCU to happen the way it should by accident" plot isn't going to be used in every single issue XD But still :D 4.5/5

Green Lantern - #24 - Excellent! :D Just excellent :D I luff the Sinestro Corps war so much and as it reaches it's apex, it's just getting better and better. :D In many ways this is reading more like a sequel to Infinite Crisis than Countdown (leading to Final Crisis supposedly) is :) This issue is exciting, it's action packed and gets the characterization down :) 5/5

Suicide Squad - #2 (of 8) - Weird :O What IS it with comic books and dinosaurs? XDD This is kinda a generic story where two ppl who dun like each other are forced by circumstances to work together and you learn about their pasts and stuff. XD It's a bit slow, but the plot still seems interesting to me :) 3/5

Superman - #668 - This is a surprisingly boring issue. :( What DID happen to the Arion plot neways? Did it vanish.. AGAIN!? XDD Wtf >_> Longest. Arc. Evar. >:O So now they're finding the third Kryptonian, and it appears they're bringing back the Silver Age Super Woman. :O Which is okay, I liked her :3 I have the comics where she appeared on my computer and I think she's a great char :D Still, it would have been nice to have more happen than just lots of exposition. :( 2/5

Kk.. so that's it :D

I'll be getting longer reviews up soon :D I've just been feeling kinda listless but that's rly no excuse XD

*hugs*

Take cares :)

Supergirl - #22 Review

Supergirl - #22

Synopsis: Equus continues to beat up on Una and Karate Kid while Supergirl stays squished under the train. :O She has a dream about being back in the 31st century with the Legion. :) She talks about how happy she is to be back and how she was always so happy to belong and have friends but they tell her that she's dreaming and needs to wake up. :o

Supergirl wakes up bloody and under the train and she lifts it up just as Equus is about to beat up Karate Kid. :O She flings it into space and then beats up Equus but he fights back :O Equus cuts her with special claws he has designed to kill Superman, but Supergirl lasers them off! However he spits some green goop on her face! :(

Meanwhile, Karate Kid surprises Equus with a karate chop that takes off his other arm and Supergirl uses her super breath to blow off the goo! XD She freezes Equus and Mr. Orr and a tactical squad show up to take him into custody.

Supergirl talks to Karate Kid and Una and acts like she knows them but they're shocked cuz they dunno her at all. :O They assume that she must have met them further on in the future and they part ways.

Kara returns to the farm and talks with Jonathan and Martha about the 31st century and stuff. Superman then shows up and they talk and Supergirl tells Superman she doesn't want to be babied and Superman explains he understands and is happy to let her be her own person and grow in her own way. :D He says that she should join the Titans and she says she'd luff to :D Then the Titans show up and say that they were trying to find her to get her to join :)

Everybody is happy ^___^

Review: Yay! Happy! :D The Equus stuff is still dumb tho but it's nice to see that Supergirl can be hurt and not break down crying about it :)

I dunno. Even tho the story on review doesn't seem that great I actually liked it :) It was fun and the fight for once wasn't gratuitous or an excuse for Supergirl panty shots :) PLUS PLUS PLUS SHE USED HER OTHER POWERS!!!!!!!!!! OH EM GEEE

It's something Superman (in particular Smallville Clark) needs to learn to do. >:| HE HAS OTHER POWERS! Esp freeze breath! It's SOOOO useful! And I'm glad that Supergirl remembered she had it and that she didn't just need to pound Equus into oblivion :)

I like that she misses the ppl in the future and liked belonging and having friends :) I feel the same way a lot and often wish I was part of a team like that :)

And I like that she talks to Jonathan and Martha about this and stood up to Superman (without the OMGIHAVETOKILLHIM crap). :) It shows that she isn't a super happy mary sue or nething XD She's a real person, she has feelings, she gets annoyed or angry, but she's just not a BAD person. :D She can tell Superman off WITHOUT wanting to beat him up or nething :)

The cover still sucks tho. >:| Now it's even MORE misleading. Supergirl vs 2 Karate Kids? XD THAT DOESN'T EVEN HAPPEN IN THE BOOK!!!!

Why does almost every Supergirl cover feature her fighting somebody who she's not fighting in the book? >_>

It even happens in the Legion of Superhero where there's a few covers of her beating up the Legion and it doesn't happen in the book at all! XD

>_>

It's like the Super Dickery covers where Superman is always beating some hero up or doing some horrible thing on the covers. XD

Wouldn't a cover of Supergirl fighting Equus be way better? :o

Why does Mr. Orr feel the need to reassure the heroes that the cops will be convinced that what they saw was a dream? In the DCU is it RLY necessary to hide the existence of superheroes and villains? It's not like they dunno what metahumans are or who superheroes are!

That's just odd <_<

I liked seeing the Titans at the end! :D Esp that they're not acting like total highschool stereotypes and Ravager's actually SMILING when she's not NEKKID and trying to SEDUCE KID DEVIL! XD

Neways :) I just liked this issue even tho it was a Countdown crossover XD I dunno why rly, I just did :) I guess it was just seeing a more human side of Supergirl :)

Angelwings Rating: 4 out of 5 smart Supergirls :)
Recommendation: worth reading if you're a Supergirl fan :)

Supergirl - #21 Review

Supergirl - #21

Synopsis: Jonathan has a horrible dream where Supergirl in Amazon garb kills Martha and then tells Jonathan that he's been trying to control forces beyond him (by raising Superman) and goes to kill him too! :O

He wakes up and goes to the kitchen where Supergirl shows up and hugs him, crying about what she did to the President's plane. :(

Meanwhile in Countdownland, Karate Kid and one third of Triplicate Girl (named Una) take a train and talk about some happenings in Countdown. >_>

A creature named Equus that is after them calls the police and says that a pair of metahumans is about to attack a train, then he attacks the train.

Wonder Girl and the Titans hear about it, and Wonder Girl calls Kara cuz she's closest and Kara flies off. :D

Meanwhile, the police see Karate Kid and Una and assume that they're responsible and attack! Karate Kid attacks them and Supergirl grabs him and flies off. Equus watches with glee but gets a call from his handler, Mr. Orr who tries to reign him in but he doesn't listen! :o

Karate Kid attacks Kara in vain, but when Una intervenes, Supergirl flashes back to her adventures in the 31st century but is shocked that they look different and faints. :(

Equus then throws a train on Supergirl. >_>

Review: I hate Countdown. I truly do. >:\ It's now infecting books I care about too! >:O

At least Kara continues to be written well and her rehabilitation continues :) I like that she's vulnerable and willing to reach out to ppl. :) It makes sense that she would see Jonathan and Martha as parent figures and that since she has no family she would consciously or subconsciously seek parental surrogates. :D

I find it odd that the Teen Titans would need Kara to get to the train, since... doesn't most of that team fly? o_O Or at least Miss Martian and Wonder Girl do right? :o The problem with the DCU is that the speed most of these ppl have kinda makes it odd that there'd only be one hero showing up to any disaster at a time. >_>

I dunno what's going on with Countdown so I can't rly speak about Equus except that his plan doesn't seem to make much sense! XD He calls the police (who stupidly go out full force on an anonymous tip) and then watches as they get defeated by the heroes, and is shocked when Supergirl shows up but pleased b/c she would beat them up for him. So his plan was to hope for a superhero to show up to do his dirty work for him or something? Then he shows up and LIFTS UP A TRAIN! So.. what was the point? Why didn't he just beat up Karate Kid and Una by himself? Why call the cops. What are the cops going to do?

Then again, nobody said that he was the brightest bulb out there either XD

I rly luff how Kara's drawn tho. :D Still :) I know this may dissapoint some ppl who seem to adore Kara as a skimpy bimbo (srsly, Ian Churchill as drawing her "drop dead gorgeous"? >_>) but I rly do like the art, tho that's not to say that this type of art is the only good art I like, but I think that after all the Churchill and Turner crap we've had on Supergirl, this is a good change. :)

In particular this panel is rly well done. :D I know she looks a little thick there and I KNOW ppl will complain (it's the angle >_>) but I do like it cuz it's so heroic and stuff :D

But all this Supergirl slutty art and worshippers of such confound me! As a Kryptonian girl, it offends me that my people are objectified by puny Earth boys and drawn and portrayed in such lewd ways. >_> Ppl need to keep their "exotic" Kryptonian fetishes in check. <_<;;

There's not much else to say rly tho. :( The story doesn't have much depth and seems way more like "the adventures of Karate Kid and Una in Countdown featuring guest Star Supergirl!" than the other way around. :(

It is good to see an acknowledgement of her adventures in the 31st century tho and I hope that adds to her personality development in future issues :)

The cover SUCKS tho. Wtf >_> It has NOTHING to do with what's inside (they barely fight) and Supergirl's skirt is a belt again. ;-;

I do like that in the issue tho, Supergirl just shrugs off Karate Kid instead of doing what the Kelly Supergirl would have done which is beat the living tar out of Karate Kid, threaten to drop him from the sky and then fly away crying about how everybody hates her. >_>;;

I'm so glad that era is over XD

Angelwings Rating: 3 out of 5 strange plotting Equus'
Recommendation: Unless you're a big Countdown fan, the story would prolly bore you, but if you like the Bedard run so far (like me :D) you might want to check this out just to see more of Supergirl being written well :D

Week of Oct. 3 2007 Super Short Reviews

Kk I'm back! :D

I'm just stressing a bit cuz I have to write a guest column somewhere and I have NO IDEA what to write >:|

*shakes* :(

Neways :D I'm sorry for the lack of big reviews :( I have SUCH a backlog I dunno where to begin >:\

*sighs*

So this week I got:

Action Comics - #856
The All-New Atom - #16
Green Lantern Corps - #16
Infinity Inc. - #2
Tales of the Sinestro Corps: Cyborg Superman - #1 (one shot)
Supergirl - #22

They were in general pretty good :)

So here are the super short reviews! :)

Action Comics - #856 - I'm not sure whether I like this one or not. :( Or is that me am not sure? :o XDDD It's very... weird... which makes sense I guess in a bizzare way cuz it's about Bizzaro? XD But it's also kinda dark, and just the.. lack of coherence about whether ppl are just DUMB or whether they actually are BACKWARDS kinda bothers me XD But it's still entertaining in a weird way XD 2.5/5

The All-New Atom - #16 - Finally, no more Countdown! XD I enjoyed this I think :D It's also RLY RLY weird, but it is VERY fun :) And that's important :D 3.5/5

Green Lantern Corps - #16 - This was an EXCELLENT issue and rly highlights why the Sinestro Corps war has been SUCH a good crossover and an example of how to do an event :) This is supposedly the "back up" book to Green Lantern in terms of the war story, but it's just so great and you rly feel the desperation and bravery of the heroes and even if they do stuff that is generally considered "bad" at the end you're still cheering for them (imho it's not bad at all >:| it's war). :) 5/5

Infinity Inc. - #2 - This story is still kinda creeping along. XD A little refresher on who all the members of the Everyman project were would be nice. XD I completely forgot who everybody is. :\ It's very mysterious tho which is interesting :) I can't wait for it to pick up :) 3/5

Tales of the Sinestro Corps: Cyborg Superman - #1 (one shot) - This is a GREAT issue which sums up the history of Cyborg Superman quite nicely and adds a lot of depth to him (he's always been a very complex and interesting villain :D) and also sets up for a great climax to the Sinestro Corps War :D 5/5

Supergirl - #22 - Despite the Countdownness, this is very much a Supergirl story and we get to see her finally remember her experiences in the future with the Legion and stuff :D Also her joining the Titans XD Her character continues to develop which I rly like and I think the story in general is pretty entertaining even tho it's all Countdowny :\ 4/5

:D

Neways! I need to go pick up a pizza XD

YAY VEGGIE PIZZA :D

*hugs*

Take cares!

Blue Beetle - #19 Review

Blue Beetle - #19

Synopsis: Jaime and Peacemaker are sparring and Jaime appears to have Peacemaker disarmed and defeated when Peacemaker hits Jaime (who is unarmoured except for his arm blades) in a pressure point causing him to throw up. :o

Peacemaker explains about pressure points on the human body and how knowledge is the one weapon ppl can't take away from you. :)

Suddenly Beetle gets a call from his cyber friends (Hector and Nadia) telling him that somebody is attacking La Dama's house and he rushes off with Paco and Peacemaker.

Brenda tracks down Hector and Nadia and sees that there's a fight going on at her aunt's house and is confused as to why somebody is attacking her (since she doesn't know that her aunt is the crime boss La Dama) and why they have cameras all over her house. :o

Meanwhile, Blue Beetle is fighting off Giganta who has been sent by Intergang to kill La Dama. Brenda figures it out and tells Jaime to hit Giganta in the eyes, making Jaime and La Dama realize that Brenda now knows who her aunt is and is angry that everybody has been lying to her. O_O;;

Giganta is not stopped easily however and Beetle escapes with La Dama trying to figure out a plan. Peacemaker tells Beetle that Giganta is magical and Beetle contacts Traci 13 for help. Traci says that since Giganta is fortified with magic, nething Beetle does will only feel like a poke to her, but that she still has human weaknesses. This gives Beetle an idea and he has Paco give Peacemaker a laser pointer, allowing Peacemaker to point out the pressure points on Giganta's body. Beetle hits them at full speed and disables her. :D

However, La Dama is upset that Brenda now knows and will soon know the truth, that her abusive father was killed by La Dama and not in a car accident like she believed. >_>;;

Jaime sends Hector and Nadia to talk to Brenda and explain that her aunt has been scaling back her criminal activities for Brenda's sake and to take care of her. :) Also, he sends his mom who comforts her :)

Review: If I were to recommend one book that displays exactly what makes Blue Beetle so great, I think it'd be this one :D

It encapsulates everything that's awesome about the series: Beetle's own unique supporting cast and villains, his unique relationship with his villain (La Dama), his compassion, his intelligence, his creativity, and how he solves problems without brute force. :)

And of course his friends and family and how important they are to him. :3 Can you imagine any other superhero sending his mother to solve a problem? :D Mind you, most teen superheroes dun HAVE parents or a close relationship with them, and that's what makes Jaime so special :D He HAS a family, he HAS friends and he lets them INTO his superhero life without fear or regret or angst ^_^

That's rly special in superhero comics >_>

I guess my only issues were the Scarab's inability to find pressure points on its own and La Dama killing Brenda's dad. :\

It's hard to justify murder, even the murder of an abusive parent. Surely she had other ways? :\ My abusive dad died in a car crash too and it just strikes rly close to home. What if he had been killed as a "gift" to me and my mom? :( Would I be happy? :\ It's one thing to be saved by an act of God, but to know that somebody murdered your parent? :\

Couldn't La Dama have called child services or pulled strings? Or threatened the father to go far far away? :( Paco and Beetle seem okay with it cuz he was hurting Brenda, but murder seems harsh when there might be other solutions :( But then she IS a crime boss and killing ppl in her way IS part of how she lives, so that would be in character for her. I just dunno how Brenda would feel about it. ;-;

In general, given the "anti killing" stance of superhero comics, it's kinda interesting to have a comic like Blue Beetle which seems to take a more pragmatic stance towards killing, esp with making La Dama a semi-good character. Does her caring for Brenda justify killing in cold blood tho? :\ She's killed many many many ppl according to Nadia, but she's just killing less now for Brenda's sake, but Brenda is very moral could she rly forgive her aunt for that or see her in the same way? :(

I'm shocked that any of the cast (Beetle, his mother, his friends, etc) would be okay with knowing that he's working with a criminal and murderer. :\ Which kinda scares me that killing seems to be treated so casually, like "oh she did bad things but she's a good person inside", since she's not rly just stealing or something, she's killing ppl! And possibly doing worse, like involved in the drug trade or something :(

I dunno... it seems like La Dama needs an arc to rly rehabilitate. Mebbe she turns herself in and cooperates with police to take down a major criminal organization or something? :( Tho they'll prolly be an explanation about how it wasn't her fault she became a criminal and that she had to do it to survive or something. :o But in my mind, that doesn't rly justify it running a criminal organization that's involved in murder and other criminal activities.

>_> That's not to say I hate the story or nething XD It just seems to have a lot of moral issues that I hope they deal with. Given that they're acknowledging she's killing ppl and that Brenda is upset about this, hopefully they will be dealing with it :D I'm shocked that Beetle is so okay with it tho, since he clearly KNEW about this while Paco just figured it out. :\

It would have just been easier if La Dama's organization was involved in lots of stuff but not lots of killing. :\

NEWAYS, there's also the Scarab armour which before used to tell Beetle all sorts of ways to kill ppl and stuff, now apparently it can't find pressure points? Peacemaker explains that while the Scarab knows how to rip ppl apart it doesn't know subtle. But it SHOULD. Just cuz it doesn't LIKE to be subtle doesn't mean it shouldn't be able to scan the human body and figure out the weak points. :\ It seems to be able to do that for everything else, why wouldn't it do that for pressure points on the human body? Esp since it was designed by the Reach to help in taking over planets. Wouldn't it obviously find weaknesses and flaws in the lifeforms on that planet?

It seems kinda odd. But it does allow Jaime to have that clever solution of having Peacemaker point the laser to direct him which was rly smart and stuffs :D I always luff it when a hero uses their brain :)

NEWAYS, aside from the La Dama question, everything else about this issue was absolutely great :) I rly luffed how we got to know more about Hector and Nadia and Nadia in particular is just ADORABLE! XD SHE IS! I luff how she insists she's not weird, she's just "eccentric". I like how she eats chips and cereal together in one bowl. XD But she's also caring and stuff. I like how she and Hector help Beetle cuz they want to be involved and to help and be respected and important. :D

Also I like when they told Brenda she's important b/c she inspires Jaime and her aunt to be better ppl. :D Tho it's a little cliche that the girl character's importance is to inspire and passively help ppl XD But it's also nice that they acknowledged she is important :D Esp since she hasn't shown up lately in Blue Beetle comics and I hope she does again. :( I want her to be helpful on the battlefield like Paco or Peacemaker (who are helpful without fighting) and not just "oh I'm this wonderful love interest to inspire the hero". XD

La Dama pointing out Peacemaker's old catchphrase ("The man who loved peace so much he's willing to kill for it") was hilarious. XD And I like how Peacemaker said that back then everybody had catchphrases. XD

Lately it's been so annoying when DC acknowledges the Silver Age as canon, but this reference worked well :)

The ending was rly great too, just to have Jaime's mom show up and hold Brenda. :3

It's rly what's so great about Blue Beetle, it's not your generic superhero comic. It has many cliches (best friend who is sekritly in love with the hero and inspires him, supervillain who is related to a main character, wise mentor, stocky best friend sidekick, cybergeeks, etc) but it's the characters and how things are handled that rly makes the book stand out. :) Jaime solves his problems without just punching things, and he has a handle on his real life too :) It's important to him, and it's part of him, he doesn't shun it or see it as a sekrit identity and he involves his loved ones in both his lives :D And I think that's rly important :)

Neways :D

So yus :D This was a great issue and you should read it if you haven't alrdy! >:|
