Black Adam: The Dark Age - #1 (of 6) Review

Black Adam: The Dark Age - #1 (of 6)

Synopsis: In a sekrit base near the border of Kahndaq, Black Adam (in human form) is being beaten up by his loyalists b/c he wants to appear mishapen enuf to avoid detection. :o

Elsewhere, the JSA track down what appears to be a Black Adam sighting and finds townsfolk hanging who they think is Black Adam! :O Atom Smasher rescues him but it turns out not to be Black Adam after all >.>

At the Kahndaq border checkpoint, Black Adam makes it thru after giving an angry sob story about how Black Adam mutilated him and murdered his family. :o

At the tomb of Isis and Osiris, Black Adam and his men kill the UN peacekeepers there and unseal the remains of Isis. :o However, more troops arrive and most of his men give their lives to allow Black Adam to escape.

The JSA arrive and find that Black Adam has been there but that the troops that attacked were not UN and that there are no bullet casings at the scene even tho Black Adam's men were killed by guns :O

They wonder why Black Adam stole Isis' body while Atom Smasher discovers a ring on a corpse but keeps the discovery to himself.

In the Himalayas, Black Adam eats the corpse of the last of his men who offered it to him (EW). >.>;; He then finds his way to a Lazarus pit and puts Isis' bones inside and she comes out of it alive! :O

Review: Gross >.>

Beatings, massacres, hauling around corpses and cannibalism. :(

Isis' corpse seemed to have decomposed rly fast tho :O This is RIGHT after 52 apparently, so she hasn't been dead for very long! Why is she basically a husk? :\

I feel so bad for Black Adam! He was my favourite char in 52 and now he's all... savage like. :( But then it's like a "how the mighty have fallen" thing? :\

Still :(

How DOES the Lazarus Pit work? :o Batman said that he didn't want to put Jason Todd in it b/c with the brain trauma, he might not come out sane.

But putting in the bones of Isis (one by one no less) works? And it just sorts itself out in the pool? :o

STILL SO GROSS

ick ick ick

What was the ring that Atom Smasher found? :O Was it something that Osiris was wearing? :o

Isis seems to have her hand so it wasn't her corpse's hand that he found right?

And mysterious mercenary ppls! :O

How did the border patrol ppl get such up to date pictures of Teth-Adam in his non super form?

Black Adam NEVER left his regular form, and only showed it to the public briefly in 52, and he was wearing ancient egyptian clothes when he did it. But here they have profile pictures of him and he's wearing regular clothes and stuff. :o

Where'd they get those pictures? :O

Tho wasn't he a regular human or something? Like an archeologist? :( I dunno what Black Adam's origin story is nemore. :(

I feel more tragedy coming tho and another death of Isis. :(

*sighs* >.>

Dun ppl who come out of the Lazarus Pit immediately go crazy for a short period of time? Or was that just the Batman Animated Series pits? XD

Neways.. other than the grossness, this was very interesting :O

But I wish we'd see MORE of the DCU Earth, and how life is after WW3 and maybe the effects on it's politics :D

I'm just curious xD

Neways, this is a good start to the series! I was worried about how it might be but it seems okay for now :) At least this issue is good XD But I feel bad that Black Adam is no longer Black Adam after giving his powers to Mary Marvel. ;-;

*shakes head sadly*

This is one of those things tho, like my sister always says about questionable comic decisions (various stuff involving Spiderman, Amazons Attack, etc) "was it rly necessary?"

Cuz things were pretty good before. :( I liked Black Adam in his old incarnation and I guess until Final Crisis is over, he's not gonna be Black Adam nemore. :\

It just seems like one of those things that they'll retcon in a year or so. :(

I just think that the Black Adam coming out of 52 (before he went crazy) had LOTS of great stories in him and could have been a rly great contributor to the DCU :)

But then he would single handedly win the Amazon War cuz he wouldn't slack off like Superman XD

Neways, this is a promising start to this mini series and I can't wait to see where it goes! :)

Angelwings Rating: 3.5 grossnesses out of 5 regular Black Adams
Recommendation: If you're a BlacK Adam fan *looks at DJ* or you're curious about what happened to him after 52, this might be a good series to read :)

I think the big problem with this comic is that it's, in the words of Chris Eckert, basically a "reverse mystery". The comic brings up several questions, like; Will Black Adam get his powers back, and what is his new secret word? Will he succesfully resurrect Isis? Are his former team mates or anyone else going to bring him to justice? Well, you don't actually need to read the comic to find out, because the answers to those things have all already been revealed in Countdown. :/ It's not actually a problem with the comic itself, but more in the way DC as a whole decides to handle these things.

Gah. Black Adam was one of my favorite characters ever, but DC ruined him. Now he's just a cheap knockoff of Kid Miracleman. Boring. And gross.

I am truly disturbed by this book. First, why didn’t Adam take her to the Lazarus Pit right after she died? He had the wisdom of Zehuti and I am sure Zehuti (Thoth) KNEW what and where the Lazarus pit was.

2nd, that finger Atom Smasher has is Isis wedding finger, so either she will disintegrate because he didn’t have all her bones to put in the pit or some other tragedy will befall her but not until she has given Adam his powers back.

3rd, come on people, cannibalism? In 52, the Question (Renee Montoya) drags the “Question” (Charlie) all the way to the Himalayan secret commune of those Rama Krushna worshippers WITHOUT eating anyone. I’m sorry, but it seems they are making BA more savage than ever necessary.

Maybe I am paranoid, but it seems to me that Adam represents some underlying fear that folks have of Arabs and by relation Black people. Black Adam it seems it the quintessential big bad “Black” man that people should fear…at least that’s how its coming off.

I’m just saying….

I usually agree with everything the DJ says, but this time I'm only going to line up behind about 75-80% of it. I don't think there's any underlying racial bias that can be used to explain Black Adam's (terrible) character disintegration. The main reason I believe this is that I just don't think most people even consider Black Adam's ethnicity at all. Much of that can be chalked up to the various artistic depictions of him. Most artists and colorists depict BA as a white man with Caucasian features and pointy ears instead of a darker-skinned man with more Levantine features. I don't know where the pointy ears come from, but they've been with the character forever, so I'm willing to let it slide. Even Mr. Photo-reference himself, Alex Ross, doesn't really depict BA as someone of Middle Eastern descent. I don't know what Ross is using for reference, but it sure doesn't look very Egyptian to me.
Getting back to my other point, I just don't think they were trying to create any kind of "crazy Arab" character or anything like that. I think that they (DC editorial) just wanted to take a pre-existing character and take him in an "extreme" direction. Black Adam just happened to be the one with the least established history and the smallest fan base. And now they've completely ruined his character, just for kicks.
I could be wrong. I could be superimposing my own impartiality and affection for the character onto other people's work. I don't think so though. I think it's just bad editorial decisions being made for shock value (oooh, cannibalism!), and not evidence of any underlying racial bias. I would not be surprised, in fact, if management instructed all DC artists to downplay BA's ethnicity whenever possible.
Now, if this were Black Manta who was acting like this, then you might have a scoop.

@John:

Well, it is plausable what you put forward, heck, you proboably are more than likely right. Maybe I have been watching too much Fox news lately and am over sensative to racial overtones in media lol

Seriously though, I admit I could be superimposing. What I will say is that I have almost given up on BA, hopefully they'll let me write an Elseworld's version of BA that I can make a bit more noble and a bit less psycho.

I would like if they made him more North African looking though...

Hi DJ :D

I'm slipping in my criticisms. :\ You made good points! *kicks self* Tho I still kinda enjoyed the book. :\ I dunno why. :( I just did XD

But I dun like what they've done to Black Adam... I guess I'm just kinda rolling with it? :\ Tho if it was to Supergirl I'd be way mad! XD

But thinking about it it DOES make no sense that he didn't use a Lazarus Pit before (the existence of Lazarus Pits sucks in general cuz it's called into question whenever anybody dies).

I dunno if it's racism, but I think you MIGHT have a point. XD My sister definitely thinks it's racism (but she thinks everything is racism >.>)

B/c even tho Black Adam isn't DRAWN as a man of colour, he definitely is depicted as one. And it seems like they feel they can take more liberties with a middle eastern foreign character.

The Cannibalism thing actually makes me think of Vandal Savage more and that they've basically made Black Adam into a Vandal Savage character. :\
