Birds of Prey - #102 Review

Birds of Prey - #102

Synopsis: Manhunter is still outside the Mexico prison. She's been captured by the resident big strong prison guard. :O

Meanwhile, Lois Lane shows up to have dinner with Oracle, and Oracle is scared b/c she knows of Lois' reputation as a great investigative reporter and that Lois will expose her. Oracle starts wondering if she'll have to leave the country now and hide. o.O

Misfit takes over Oracle's control room but is unable to use her computer skills (or lack thereof) to help the Birds who are held at gunpoint by government agents. :O She realizes that they dun need nething more than a distraction and she teleports into the fray, giving the heroes the chance they need to fight back!

In the melee however, the girl they were protecting is captured, and her father, who was trading his daughters safety for his testimony against the mob, is shot. :(

Manhunter has now been brought into the prison to be interrogated. There are American government agents there as well. :O Manhunter beats them all up and reveals that she only allowed herself to be captured! o_o Gypsy shows up too having been invisible all along and they beat up the guards. :O

Oracle, feeling pressued by Lois Lane, prepares to show her a photo of Lois kissing Superman, as leverage, but Lois draws her a picture of Oracle's computerized image mask and leaves, saying she doesn't see a story here. :|

Oracle then gets a call from Spy Smasher telling her that Manhunter is beating ppl up in Mexico. Oracle says that Manhunter was supposed to be finished there and thinks that Manhunter must have gone rogue! :OO

Review: I thought that Lois Lane knew all the heroes and their identities! At least that's been the implication they keep giving us, that Superman doesn't hide nething from Lois. :| Like, if Superman told her Batman's identity (and Batman's extremely paranoid about his identity) then she HAS to know Oracle's. :O Oracle herself seems unaware that Lois is Superman's wife. Tho it's possible she knew but was just rly scared neways. :o

The whole thing is silly tho! Like srsly! I thought all the heroes and their family knew each other! If Jean Loring knows their identities, then Lois has to! :O And like, it makes me giggle thinking about what would happen if Lois was to publish a story blowing open all the heroes and their identities. Like.. imagine Clark's reaction! XD He walks in, "hi honey, what are you doing?" "Oh just working on a story that will unmask that sneaky Oracle person and destroy her organization!" "Um... Lois honey, I ... dun think you should do that..."

>.>;; So yah... everything about that rang false. :|

I rly liked the rest of the book tho! The Manhunter stuff was a bit cliched... like it was obvious she threw the fight b/c no hero would get whomped by some random tough. XD I dun think she's AWOL tho. Tho it does add a layer of intrigue. :O Like, maybe Barbara doesn't know as much as she thinks she does? :o I rly hate it when characters are showing up in multiple books tho! Like, if she's in Mexico, when do the events in Manhunter take place!?

I didn't rly like Misfit when she first showed up b/c I thought she was just there to say "HA there will be no more Batgirls!" but she's grown on me XD I'm amused she calls herself Misfit, and I like how fun loving and happy she is! XD She's kinda like how I wish Supergirl was: helpful, cute and enjoying being new to the superhero thing! :D

Her expressions and poses are marvelously drawn and convey a lot about her. :)

Barda still seems to be missing her chestplate tho. :( That's sad. Like, it's kinda important since it's ARMOUR and not just decorative. :\ And as a former Fury and a warrior, wouldn't practicality trump showing off her breasts? :o

It's like Huntress and the bare stomach. :| She's human, and like Batman, she outfits her suit with kevlar to protect herself. So why isn't an important part of her body covered? Not like being stabbed or shot in the stomach doesn't SUCK or nething XD

Still, I think the good parts outweighed the bad and Misfit outweighs everything XD I'm kinda interested to see how things turn out. :) I just thought the Lois Lane part was rly confusing and seemed to contradict things we alrdy knew about the DCU. :|

Go Misfit! XD

Angelwings Rating: 3/5 missing costume pieces
Recommendation: Worth checking out, esp if you're a Birds of Prey fan :)

I like that Superman says "dun" in this review. I think that he would in real-life. He should anyway. Maybe that would cause him to be less of a jerk.

I think I would like Superman more if he spoke a little more fun:

"Dun mess with KING SUPERMAN!!! xD"

"Umm...Superman---"

"KING SUPERMAN!!! :O"

"Fine. King Superman...do you really need to use emoticons in your ACTUAL SPEECH?"

"):"

"See? Like that? What does that even mean anyway?"

"IDK Batman, but that's rly not the point. The point is that I am KING SUPERMAN hehehe"

"Hehehe?"

"Yus!" *puts smaller crown on Batman*

"Umm...."

"Ur KING SUPERMAN JR.!!! Yus! Dun you <3 it?"

*groans*

I give this review 52.4 KING SUPERMAN crowns out of 52.4.

Can you for once write an entry without the damn illiterate text speak? Seriously, it makes you look like an idiot.

The word 'really' is spelt 'really'. Really.

Everytime I click on one of your entries from When Fangirls Attack I hit the back button straight away. I cannot read this txt spk shit. It's like fingernails on a chalkboard.

For the love of god learn to spell and write like a literate adult.

Dear 72nd Aqua Violet,

If you do not like the way she types, I am curious why you do not just *not* read her typing? She's not pinning you down to make you read it, I don't think.

Know what? The word "spelt" is spelled "spelled". Really.

She is literate. It's simply a choice she makes. And, the fact, is - it's her's to make. It is not a choice left to the 72 aqua-coloured violets of this world.

Also, as a side-note, did you really think posting this here would make her think "gee, some person who is really bored wants me to type like them...I SHOULD TOTALLY DO THAT."

The correct answer, my colourful friend, is no.

Sickly, cranky, let-people-live-their-lives love,

Definite bad use of Lois.
I do like Misfits attitude, but we'll see how it changes if/when she faces her first serious situation (sorry, but as someone once said 'it's tough being excited about being a hero after you've seen Joker use arsinic on a group of boy scouts'.)
And yes, the costumes just don't make sense. But since thier being drawn by men who don't date much then thats how thier gonna draw them. Maybe someday it'll change.

Oh and as for Aqua-velvet or whatever thier name is, this is her blog and she can write however she chooses. If you don't like it then don't read it, but by comming to a blog you don't like and whinning you end up sounding like a true loser.

Oh, and Kalinka- nicely put.

FYI,Azathoth, that costume was drawn by Nicola Scott, a woman. Also, I have no knowledge of her dating life or marital status, but judging by her photo in an interview I once read, she could probably get a lot of dates if she wanted to.

So much for comic gender stereotypes.

Also, is it possible Lois was putting on some kind of act for Spy Smasher's benefit?

Ami Angelwings said...

Hi notintheface! :D Welcome to my journal!

I thought and thought about that possiblity! But we got Oracle's thoughts via the little thought boxes. So if she was putting on an act, she was acting in her thoughts too? :\ Like she was actually SCARED of Lois in her mind.

So it doesn't seem like it :(

And yah, I alrdy knew that the writer was female, but that doesn't mean it's not drawn for men (or was an editorial decision) XD The Huntress outfit is a Loeb/Lee thing tho. :\ I dun rly know who decides on how the costumes should look tho, or how much freedom the artists get to redesign them.

Neways, TY for reading!!! :DDD

Hi, Ami! Thanks for the welcome.

I meant to suggest that Lois was pulling an act that Oracle was not necessarily in on. This has some holes in it, too, though. In any event, this scene doesn't fit, as Chris Sims mentioned before, in a universe where Ray Palmer's ex-wife knows Robin's secret identity.

As far as the costumes, I was only addressing Barda's costume in BOP#102. For the record, I HATED Lee's Huntress costume, especially on someone who had suffered previous wounding in the abdominal area. But Helena had long ago traded that one in for the full-body costume she wore in #102. The difference is that, unlike Huntress, Barda is nearly as invulnerable as Wonder Woman and Power Girl, plus she was dealing with conventional Earth weaponry.

I figured you knew that Gail Simone(the writer) was female, but I wasn't sure you knew the artist was too. (Names can be so tricky; I was surpised to learn Simone Bianchi was a guy.) I knew Az didn't, since she used a stereotype that I couldn't resist shattering (artists who draw revealing outfits on women heroes being men who don't get many dates) because it was so contrary to the reality in this case.

::Also, is it possible Lois was putting on some kind of act for Spy Smasher's benefit? ::

That was what I thought, Notintheface - or more to the point, that Lois is playing a long game of her own. I think the point is Lois knows more about what's going on than Barbara in this case - she knows Barbara is Oracle, whereas Barbara doesn't know Lois's husband, Clark, is Superman. From the way it's written, I suspect Lois Lane is getting her own read on Barbara Gordon - how much does Barbara know, and how far will she go to protect secrets Lois is as interested in preserving as Barbara is? Otherwise, threatening Lois a picture of her & Superman kissing would be pointless - and a deliberate attempt to "slime" someone Barbara deeply respects, and who helped save her life fairly recently (BoP #71)!

Yeah, I know that sounds inconceivable - one of Batman's proteges didn't twig to "Clark Kent is Superman!"? The same protege, who's now a megahacker, never PhotoShopped Clark's glasses off a picture and figured it out for herself? As Tempus said in LOIS & CLARK: THE NEW ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN, "Well, that was worth the whole trip. To actually meet the most galactically stupid woman who ever lived!" (Supervillain as Comics Fan - you almost wonder that, before trying to kill Superman, he didn't ask him to autograph his copy of ACTION COMICS #1. With Superman dead, it'd be a REAL collectible for sure! >:) )

Sorry - it sounds like I'm giving Gail a hard time about this, and I'm not. Since neither DC nor Marvel actually keep an up-to-the-minute bible on all their characters, relationships, who's really dead and who's just resting (though the OFFICIAL HANDBOOKS OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE and DC COMICS ENCYCLOPEDIA help, they don't seem to keep pace with recent story developments), it's usually up to the individual writers and editors to decide Who Knows Somebody's Secret Identity or Not. Tammy and I have had to make the same types of decisions ourselves while writing WHITE TIGER - and it's not easy when the characters' connection is open to interpretation, like Lois Lane's to Barbara Gordon's.

PS: Ami, I know you're choosing to write in chatspeak - but it IS hard for us older folks to parse, sometimes....

Hi Tim! Welcome to the blog! :D

I kept trying to look at that from every angle... like.. even what you said, but it still doesn't ring true. :\ And it wouldn't make ne sense for Oracle to not know that Superman's Clark Kent when so many ppl do, and Oracle is the heroes top information person. :|

Neways, thx for stopping by! :D As for the way I write, this blog is for me and my friends and whoever decides to drop in! XD I just write how I feel comfortable writing in a casual style when I'm not writing essays, etc. If ppl read, it's an extra bonus :)

I'm sorry if you find it difficult to understand tho :(

Tim, Ami, who said Barbara didn't know Supes' identity, even before discovering that picture? She didn't say so in her thoughts.

Ami Angelwings said...

Notintheface,

I didn't say she didn't. I was just saying that if we're operating on the assumption that she didn't, it still wouldn't make sense XD If she DID tho, then should wouldn't be scared. All she had to do was wait for Lois to leave, call Superman and tell him "your wife is about to expose us".

Like, she acted like she had a reason to be scared, and she should know she doesn't. :\

Hi, sorry for posting here, but I couldn't find your email.

I thought you might be interested in seeing my short student film, 'The Scarlet Avenger'. It's a comedic homage to all the 1940s action/adventure serials that inspired films like 'Raiders of the Lost Ark', 'The Rocketeer' and 'Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow'. I'm currently developing it into a feature-length film. More info can be found on my blog at:

scarletavenger.blogspot.com

On the site you'll find links to a high-quality version of the complete 22-minute short, the podcast version at the Itunes Music Store (free) and the 3-part YouTube version.

Hope you enjoy it. I'd love to hear from you.
